Heptakosmoj is an immersive art project and book series. 'Heptakosmoj' means 'seven worlds', describing seven lives of one character in different times and places.
The seven lives of main character Oxzana Mendelstova can be read in novels, heard in music, seen in videos, paintings, installations and performance, sometimes even danced, tasted and smelled.
It's a multi-layered spatial poem. You can start exploring these worlds by reading the first novel Mendelstov or by joining an event in Mellius’ warehouse atelier in Amsterdam Noord.

Mellius explains: 'Heptakosmoj' means seven worlds. 'Hepta' is seven in ancient Greek and 'kosmoj' means worlds. The entire project is based on seven novels, with themes such as women power, freedom, good and evil, black and white and all these opposites play a crucial part in the story. I start with the sixth world. The world of Mendelstov tells of the initiation journey of Oxzana Mendelstova. Oxzana Mendelstova is a girl, aged 24, when she leaves her village to travel the world in order to free it.
I adore changes, so I love painting, I photograph, make jewelry, and some worlds also need their own clothing style, so I also design clothing. What drives this entire novel, is music. Classical music by old Russian composers. And dance, lots of dance. There's the written component... That floats down from your spirit.. or who knows... But these are words. With these words everyone can make their own imagination. But here you see the crystallisation of these words. So you actually see what the words mean. The tent. The truck. The altar for Women Power.
And all those paintings that you see in the tent are part of a Spatial Poem, which is something highly theoretical. But here you can see it expressed in paintings. When you walk through my atelier, you are walking through a novel.
OXZANA'S
JOURNEY
In Heptakosmoj a tale is told of the inner and outer journey of protagonist Oxzana Mendelstova. Through time and space she searches for her own identity, freedom and redemption for her people.
Her quest is expressed in multiple artforms. The interconnecting stories of Oxzana, glimpses of her seven lives in different times and bodies, and her fellow travelers are the lifeblood of Heptakosmoj.
